Ways to Make a Secure Connection on Chrome

With so many accessible and convenient features, it is sure to become the first choice of users and can be used as the default browser. Here are some reasons why Google Chrome connections can become insecure.

Some webpages or websites may not be compatible with the TLS 1.3 flag, causing this issue.

There may be other causes such as misconfigured Internet settings, corrupt Winsock configuration, proxy or VPN, outdated Chrome version, and loaded or corrupt browsing data.

Method 1: Clear browser data

Abnormal aggregation of browsing data such as caches, cookies, and historical files uses unnecessary Internet resources. Wait until the unwanted data is deleted. When done, close the Chrome app. Restart it and check if a secure connection can be established.

Method 2: Update Chrome

Outdated browsers may not support temporary versions of web pages, preventing you from accessing them. To fix bugs and issues, you must update Google Chrome to the latest version. Follow the steps below.

1. Press the Windows key, type Chrome and click Open.

2. Type chrome://settings/help in the address bar to directly launch the About Chrome page.

3A. If Google Chrome is updated to the latest version, it will show that Chrome is up to date.

3B. If a new update is available, the browser will automatically update the browser to the latest version. Click Restart to restart the browser.

4. Finally, restart your browser with the latest version.

Method 3: Disable Chrome flags (if applicable)

Option I: Disable TLS 1.3

TLS or Transport Layer Security is the channel responsible for connecting the communication between the user's computer and the website. TLS 1.3 is an advanced version with enhanced security properties. Just change some options in Chrome settings to try out older versions of TLS. Here's how to disable TLS1.3 for a secure connection to Chrome.

1. Open Google Chrome.

2. Enter Chrome://flags on the browser page and press Enter.

3. Select an available tab.

4. Enter TLS in the search bar and select the Disable option for TLS related flags.

5. Click the Restart button at the bottom.

Option Two: Disable the Throttle Flag

This flag helps you limit or control open Chrome tabs to up to 1% of CPU resources. This happens when the page is inactive for more than 5 minutes. But sometimes, this flag can also cause connection problems. Follow the steps given below to disable the throttle flag.

1. Follow steps 1-3 in option I to go to the Chrome flags page.

2. Type throttle in the search bar and disable the Throttle Expensive Background Timers flag.

3. Click the Restart button at the bottom.

Method 4: Disable the problematic extension (if applicable)

If you've recently added a new extension to Chrome, it may cause security issues. So, follow the steps below to check for any suspicious add-ons and remove them. Don't worry if the installed extension doesn't help you. Try it once by disabling and re-enabling the Google Meet Grid View extension. To do so, follow the instructions.

1. Launch the Google Chrome browser application as described above.

2. Type chrome://extensions in the Chrome URL bar and press Enter.

3. On the Extensions page, find the Google Meet Grid View plugin. Then, turn off the toggle switch as shown.

Method 5: Turn off hardware acceleration (if applicable)

1. Open the Google Chrome browser and click the vertical three-dot icon in the upper right corner of the page.

2. Then, click the Settings option.

5. Turn off the toggle for the Use hardware acceleration when available setting.

6. Click Restart.

Method 6: Perform a network reset

If it's affected due to a technical glitch, your system's network components can be causing you trouble, especially your Chrome. Cryptographic services such as Function Discovery Provider Host and Function Discovery Resource Publication are responsible for the proper functioning of file sharing functions. In this case, these services must be up and running. To do this, follow the steps below to establish a secure connection on Google Chrome.

1. Press the Windows + R keys simultaneously and launch the Run dialog.

2. Type services.msc and press Enter to start the Services window.

3. In the Services window, locate Cryptographic Services. Right click on it and select Properties.

4. On the Properties tab, set Startup Type to Automatic. Then, click OK to save the changes.

Note: If the service status is Running, click Stop to end the service. Then, click Start to reboot.

5. Repeat all the above steps and restart the DNS Client service.

Method 8: Flush DNS Cache

DNS or Domain System names act as translators between machines and humans. It converts the name or domain name of the website you visit (eg https://techcult.com/) into an IP address so that the machine can understand it. Using the Internet often automatically accumulates IP addresses, increasing their cache. These caches limit DNS loading, which affects the Chrome browser. Method 9: Disable proxy or VPN

A VPN or Virtual Private Network is a technology that provides online privacy with encryption that enables users to protect all data they receive or send on the Internet. Method 10: Modify Internet Settings

1. Press the Windows key. Type control panel and open it.

2. Set View by to Category. Click Network and Internet.

3. Click the highlighted Internet option.

4. Switch to the Connections tab. Click the LAN Settings button under the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings section.

5. Make sure all checkboxes are disabled. Then, click OK to save the changes.

Method 11: Modify Group Policy

This method works for those using Windows 10 Pro or any other enterprise edition. Many users reported that after making some changes to the Local Group Policy Editor properties, the browser started working properly again. Follow the steps to make the necessary modifications.

Note: You can only access the Group Policy Editor if you are using Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions.

1. Press the Windows + R keys simultaneously and launch the Run dialog.

2. Type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open the Group Policy Editor window.

3. In the Local Group Policy Editor window, navigate to the Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Public Key Policies folder in the left pane.

4. Double-click the Certificate Path Validation Settings file under the Public Key Policies folder.

5. On the Store tab, check the Define these policy settings box and uncheck the Allow user-trusted root CAs to verify certificates (recommended) box.

6. Now, click Apply and select OK to save the changes.

Method 12: Disable antivirus SSL encryption (not recommended)

This property can create an atmosphere of conflict when you have a third-party antivirus application installed on your computer and use SSL scanning, especially with the CryptSVC service in Windows 10. 1. Press the Windows key, type McAfee, and press Enter.
